Description

This study assesses the capacities and future potential opportunities of the bioeconomy in six Eastern African countries. It provides insights into the use of renewable resources and technologies while offering recommendations to accelerate future uptake for economic and social growth. The bioeconomy replaces fossil raw materials and develops new products and processes that enhance economic competitiveness and societal welfare. In doing so, it contributes to and creates the foundation for a sustainable economy. New ideas, approaches, technological innovations, and political frameworks on the environment, climate, and sustainability are essential to drive the transition to a viable biobased economy. The study is based on a desk review of the current capacities and potential opportunities for the bioeconomy sector in Eastern African countries, including Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. It identifies and analyzes the development and trade-related opportunities and challenges in each country, providing a comprehensive understanding of existing capacities in the bioeconomy sector and the additional capacities needed to strengthen the region's bioeconomy.
