Description
This policy brief highlights that dynamic new funding models have been developed, adopted, and deployed in various countries and sectors to address the realities of decreasing traditional funding sources for research and innovation. These models, which include partnerships, co-funding, and multidisciplinary approaches, aim to ensure the context-driven, efficient, and effective utilization of scarce resources. However, challenges such as insufficient political will, lack of implementation plans, and uncoordinated approaches to STI have been reported to hinder the expansion and sustainable deployment of these new funding models. This policy brief offers several recommendations for science granting councils, the African Union, regional economic communities, national governments, the private and non-profit sectors, and development partners. These stakeholders are encouraged to leverage their access to global intellectual and financial resources, as well as their convening power, to further enhance the availability of capabilities and funding across different stages of the research and innovation value chain.
