This policy brief highlights the urgent need for new models of research and innovation funding in Africa amidst declining traditional funding sources. It emphasizes the role of contextualized research and innovation as key drivers of sustainable development, addressing critical areas like health, energy, and food security. However, many African countries lack the necessary innovation ecosystems to turn knowledge into impactful products and services. To address this, the brief calls for systemic approaches to funding, including building coalitions across innovation systems, designing effective policies and governance structures, and supporting emerging technologies to drive inclusive socioeconomic growth, as envisioned in Agenda 2063.
