Description
The Kenyan floriculture sub-sector is the fastest-growing segment of the horticultural industry, contributing Kshs. 18.7 billion out of a total horticultural export value of Kshs. 32.6 billion, according to the Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA). Between 1995 and 2005, Kenya’s cut flower export earnings increased by over 300%, with export volumes growing from 29,373 metric tons in 1995 to 81,218 metric tons in 2005. The HCDA highlights significant growth potential among small-scale flower growers, particularly in Nyandarua, Thika, and Kiambu districts, where farmers primarily cultivate summer flowers like eryngium, lilies, and agapanthus. With proper financial and technical support, alongside conducive policies, small-scale growers could greatly contribute to the sector's expansion.
