Description
This study accesses the capacities and future potential opportunities of the bioeconomy in six eastern Africa countries. It provides insight into the use of renewable resources and technologies and provides recommendations on accelerating future uptake for economic and social growth. The bioeconomy replaces fossil raw materials and develops new products and processes that improve economic competitiveness and welfare. In so doing, the bio-economy contributes to and creates the conditions for a sustainable economy. Evidently, new ideas, approaches, technological perspectives, and political frameworks on the environment, climate, and sustainability are needed to drive the transition to a viable biobased economy. The study relies on a desk review of the current capacities and potential opportunities for the bio-economy sector in eastern Africa countries. Countries include - Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. The review identifies and analyzes the development and trade-related opportunities and challenges in each country. This analysis provides an understanding of key capacities already existing in the bioeconomy sector in each participating country and the desired or additional capacities needed within the region's bio-economy.
