Zambia has been working to modernize its IP laws to align with international standards, particularly in the areas of digital rights management and the protection of traditional knowledge. Efforts are being made to strengthen IP enforcement, particularly in combating counterfeit goods and piracy, which are significant challenges in the country. Despite a robust legal framework, enforcement of IP rights remains a challenge due to limited resources and awareness. There is a need for greater awareness among the public and businesses about the importance of IP protection and the available mechanisms for enforcement.

Zambia has a foundation for using IP to drive economic development and improve social outcomes. The legal framework, institutional structure, and examples of PPPs and technology transfer are positive signs. However, addressing the significant challenges related to enforcement, public awareness, and access to affordable medicines is crucial for maximizing the benefits of IP. The report effectively highlights these challenges and implicitly suggests relevant recommendations. Continued focus on strengthening institutional capacity, promoting IP awareness, fostering local innovation, and addressing the access to medicines issue will be key to unlocking the full potential of IP in Zambia.
