Bio-economy sectors and production systems that utilize and process biological resources are important segments of the economies in the six Eastern Africa countries. As a result the over 30% of the regions GDP can be directly attributed
to agriculture and other bio-economy related sectors. Agriculture and Livestock subsectors accounts for about 30% of regions GDP and is predominantly small scale farming is the largest employer but characterized by low incomes and
low value addition. Fishing and aquaculture is another important sector that has huge potential in the region due to the availability of inland lakes, coast line and aquaculture. In deed countries in the region have recognized the potential of what is now called the blue economy with huge opportunities in both the domestic and export markets.
