The Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in sub-Saharan Africa aims to strengthen the capacities of science granting councils (SGCs) to support ethical research and innovation, contributing to Africa's economic and social development. A 2021 study investigated strategies employed by 15 SGCs to promote research ethics and integrity. These strategies include requiring proof of ethics committee approval before funding, incorporating ethics questions in funding applications, and developing standardized national research guidelines. The study highlights the diversity of activities undertaken by SGCs and emphasizes cross-fertilization of ideas to enhance ethical practices in research and innovation. It underscores the potential for these efforts to improve oversight and support for research funded by SGCs.
